Why we built Alontraw
Your body is a complete system of hardware, software, and fuel. Habits determine which mode it operates in. Eighty percent of the work to change your mode is yours to do at home. A practitioner closes the remaining twenty percent.
THE PREMISE
Your body is a system, not a list of symptoms
The problem with how most of us are taught to think about health is that we have learned to chase symptoms one at a time.
A bad night of sleep. A bloated stomach after lunch. A bad mood we cannot explain. Each symptom gets a fix. Each fix is unrelated to the others. The body is treated like a series of disconnected windows.
Alontraw is built on a different premise. The body is one system with three layers that have to work together. Hardware is the physical layer, your tissues and organs and the way they move. Software is the mind layer, your nervous system, your stress response, your patterns of attention. Fuel is the energy layer: your food, your sleep, your light, your breath. When one of these layers is overworked, and another is neglected, energy gets stuck in the overworked one and dries up in the neglected one. That imbalance is what produces what we call illness.
This is why the symptom-by-symptom approach often fails. The bloated stomach after lunch is usually not a stomach problem. It is a fuel problem layered on top of a software problem, showing up in the hardware. The bad mood is usually not a mood problem. It is a software issue with roots in fuel and hardware. None of these get better in isolation. They get better when the whole system is rebalanced.
THE SCIENCE
How fast you age is the real signal
The human body has a biological ceiling of approximately 120 years. Most Americans fall forty to fifty years short of that ceiling. The reason is not bad luck. It is that most of us live in a way that ages our biology faster than necessary.
The pace of that aging is now measurable. A test called the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock tracks how fast your biology is moving per calendar year. A score of 1.0 means you are aging at the baseline biological rate. A score of 1.25 means you are aging about twenty five percent faster than that. A score of 1.5 means you are aging about fifty percent faster. The score is shaped by the things you can already feel. Sleep, stress, food, breath, movement, environment.
In the Bay Area, the spread is striking. Life expectancy across local ZIP codes ranges from 73 years in parts of San Francisco to 86 years in San Mateo County. Thirteen years of difference, twenty minutes of BART apart. The pace of aging is real, it is measurable, and most of it is not genetic. That is the good news. What is shaped by habits can be reshaped by habits.
THE FRAMEWORK
The four modes
Alontraw organizes that pace into four operating modes. Each mode is a snapshot of how fast your body is aging right now, and what your body needs from you to change.
Optimal mode is a velocity of about 1.0 times baseline. Your hardware is resilient, your software is balanced, your fuel is unburdened. You are not repairing damage. You are sustaining and optimizing. The work here is small adjustments that preserve what is already working.
Automatic mode is a velocity of about 1.25 times. The hardware is starting to stagnate. The software is running on high static, often invisibly. The fuel load is increasing. You feel fine most days. You do not know that the system is quietly drifting. This is the mode where pattern interruption matters most, and where functional medicine work is most preventive.
Low Power mode is a velocity of about 1.5 times. The hardware is warping. The software is overloaded. The fuel system is overwhelmed. Symptoms are daily and noticeable. Fatigue, brain fog, irritation that comes back.
This is the largest group we see and the one most underserved by conventional care. Without intervention, the trajectory is toward Warning.
Warning mode is a velocity of about 1.75 times. The hardware is in critical condition. The software is static. The fuel is bankrupt. The body's adaptive mechanisms are starting to fail. This is not yet a diagnosis. It is a signal that professional assessment is urgent.
These modes are not labels you wear forever. They are the operating state your habits are producing today. They move.

THE ASSESSMENT
Six questions, one operating state
The mode you are in today is shaped almost entirely by how you live. Alontraw uses a short assessment of six questions, drawn from validated clinical screens, to estimate which mode you are operating in.
The questions ask where you live, how you feel sitting alone in silence, how you feel after a regular night of sleep, how your body feels after lunch, what role caffeine plays in your day, and how your body feels throughout a typical day. Each one is short. Together, they triangulate how your hardware, software, and fuel are interacting at this moment in your life.
Each question is anchored to a validated health instrument. Polyvagal mapping for the nervous system. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for sleep. The SF-36 vitality scale for metabolism.
The output is not a diagnosis. It is a starting point. A description of the system you are running right now and the direction it is moving.
THE PROTOCOL
Eighty percent at home, twenty percent with a practitioner
Here is the part that matters most. Once you know your mode, eighty percent of the work to move into a better mode is yours to do at home. The remaining twenty percent is where a practitioner accelerates that work, or unlocks a piece you cannot reach on your own.
The homework is not dramatic. It is the slow, ordinary work of rebalancing your three layers.
For hardware, that means movement, posture, breath, and time outdoors. For software, that means nervous system regulation, sleep, attention, and the relationships you keep. For fuel, that means how you eat, when you eat, what you drink, and how you recover between meals. None of this is new. The novelty is putting it in service of one system at a time, in a sequence that fits your current mode.
Each mode guide on Alontraw walks through the protocol for that mode in order. Hardware first if your body is warping. Software first if your nervous system is loud. Fuel first if your post lunch energy keeps collapsing. Most readers will move one mode in the right direction within a year of holding to the protocol. Many will move two.
The remaining twenty percent is what a practitioner is for. A functional medicine doctor reads the labs you cannot read yourself. A naturopath unwinds a hormone or gut picture that home protocols cannot reach. A somatic therapist works on a software layer that thinking alone cannot release. The Alontraw directory filters practitioners by mode, condition, and location. You arrive knowing what you need before you book, which means the first appointment is useful instead of exploratory.
HOW TO USE ALONTRAW
Read the system, then change it
There are three ways to use Alontraw. Take the assessment to find your mode. Open the mode guide that explains the home protocol for the layer you are in. Browse the practitioner directory when the protocol tells you it is time to bring in help.
The journal is the connective tissue between the three. We write about what functional medicine actually is and is not. We review the longevity tools that matter and the ones that have aged badly. We interview practitioners on the directory. We publish three to four pieces a month, slowly enough to keep quality high.
What you will not find here is generic content or supplement marketing. The framework is the editorial standard. If a piece does not move a reader closer to understanding their own system, it does not run.
Start with the assessment. Find your mode. Use the home protocols. Bring in a practitioner when the framework tells you it is time. The work is yours. We are here to make it clearer.
